Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to design solutions for intriguing applications; for example, Hydrodyne solutions have been part of every NASA program from Mercury to the International Space Station. All you need is analytical savvy and a bit of experience -- we'll bring you up to speed on our unique technologies and products. You'll join a smaller but highly successful organization, and we'll welcome your ideas and insights. Solid performers enjoy career growth opportunities at Hydrodyne, and we'll respect you efforts to maintain work/life balance.

You will provide engineering input on all aspects of projects, from design to testing, for a variety of fluid control components, primarily high performance metal seals and precision "safe-shear" burst discs. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and design experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally in aerospace. You'll also need demonstrated strength in 3D modeling and in finite element, stress, and other analyses. We're looking for a professional who can learn quickly (we'll provide training opportunities) and has the interpersonal skills to fit in well in a team-oriented environment and family-like culture.

Hydrodyne has over 40 years of experience in the design, development, and manufacture of components for fluid control. We custom design a variety of products, from metal seals and bellows to relief and check valves, for critical areas in diverse industries, from aerospace to nuclear power to automobile racing engines. Our 17,000 square foot facility is ISO9000 and AS9000 certified.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

The ideal candidate will have a BME and about five years of experience, although we will consider diverse combinations of education and experience (such as an advanced degree and relevant internship experience) provided you have the analytical skills and ability to learn quickly. In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • Proven abilities in 3D modeling (we use SolidWorks).
  • Familiarity with analytical design software, ideally COSMOSWorks and/or COSMOSDesignSTAR.
  • Resourcefulness and a demonstrated ability to achieve goals independently, as well as a track record of contributing as a team player.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in a small to medium company is preferred.
Because of our government government contracts & subcontracts, you must be a US citizen to hold this position.

What's in It for You

Career development -- you'll work directly with Hydrodyne's owner and CEO (to whom you will report), an Engineer with deep experience, technical expertise, and proven success in business leadership. We'll help you get the training you need to master our systems and technologies. We're open to your ideas on how to improve processes and products, and your success in this role could set you up to pursue a Chief Engineer position down the road.

Great work environment -- we've created a congenial and collaborative atmosphere that plays a key role in our success. We enjoy the family culture of a smaller company, and we're more focused on delivering results than on hierarchy and bureaucracy. We'll look to you to achieve your goals independently, providing support when you need it and "elbow room" when you don't.

Work/life balance -- you'll seldom work more than 40 hours a week and, in fact, all of our managers work a half-day on Fridays. Assuming you're getting the job done, we'll offer a degree of flexibility in your schedule.

Award winning performance -- through the years we've earned accolades for our quality and service, including "Supplier of the Year" from Boeing Space System, Rocketdyne division, and Allied Signal Engines Division; "Special Recognition" from Pratt & Whitney, Lockheed Martin, and Primex; and the "Silver Snoopy Award" from NASA for contributing to enhancement and safety of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Our facilities include:
  • CNC machining centers and coordinate measurement.
  • Spacecraft approved Teflon coating facility.
  • Automatic TIG welding equipment.
  • Assembly and testing capability.
  • Helium leak testing.
  • Environmental testing.
  • And more.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, ESOP, and more.

More About Your Role

You will be our one staff Engineer, and work with two Consulting Engineers in a peer relationship. In general one of the Consultants handles sales engineering and the other project engineering, but the group shares responsibilities and each supports the others. In the first few months we'll look to you to focus on learning our products, systems, and processes, although you'll be performing FEA on a regular basis just about from day one.

Ours is a high-spec, low volume operation, and 10 pieces is a big order for us. Most projects involve high performance metal seals and precision "safe-shear" burst discs, but we also design and manufacture a variety of fluid control components (see "Who We Are," below, for a complete list). Most projects come in from potential customers, and we also pursue RFPs. A typical project will take from three to six months from design to delivery, and you can expect to be working on multiple projects at any given time.

In some situations you may take a customer's request for information and invest several hours in chasing down the answers, researching the materials, design issues, and specs. Sometimes this investment of time results in our landing the project and sometimes it doesn't. When it does, you would drive all aspects of the project, including design, building, and testing (which may involved designing and building test equipment). Throughout we'll look to you to embrace our commitment to TQM, concurrent engineering, and continuous process improvement.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring an amiable, good-natured approach and share our enjoyment of delivering results through collaboration. In addition, because we are a smaller company, this is a hands-on role you'll need to be wiling to "roll up your sleeves" to achieve your goals.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Who We Are

Hydrodyne's high performance products include metal seals, machined metal bellows, wire cloth strainers and filters, precision "safe-shear burst discs, latching solenoid valves, pressure regulators, relief and check valves, specialty metal diaphragms, specialty Belleville springs, and micro-arc pulse TIG Welding. We offer a variety of materials and coatings as well as precision manufacture for applications involving extreme temperatures and pressure.

We have designed and manufactured a variety of components for:
  • Space launch vehicles in the Mercury, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, including Atlas, Saturn, Delta, Titan, and SSME.
  • Spacecraft such as NASA satellites, the Hubble Space Telescope, Gravity Probe B, and military satellites.
  • Aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird, F-15 Eagle, and V-22 Osprey.
  • Industrial and commercial applications, including rail car pressure overload systems, silicon wafer tools, power generation, fluid control systems, high performance automotive racing components, and nuclear power plant refueling system seals.
